Lionel Messi to Retire at Newell’s Old Boys After Inter Miami Stint

Written by Keji Evelyn

According to reports, Lionel Messi has already decided to join Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown of Rosario upon the expiration of his contract with Inter Miami in 2025.

The Argentine icon has been a roaring success in the MLS since his move from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but is now set to return home to finish his career where it all began.

Messi’s decision to join Newell’s would be the ultimate show of respect to their hardcore supporters, who have long dreamed of seeing their prodigal son return to the club.

The 36-year-old got a taste of the adoration he would receive on a weekly basis when playing in a testimonial match for Maxi Rodriguez at Newell’s Estadio Marcelo Bielsa a few months ago.

With Messi now being accepted by the general public in Argentina after emerging out of Diego Maradona’s shadow, a return to Newell’s would be a fitting end to his remarkable career.

It is also possible that Messi could don the Blaugrana shirt once more in his own tribute match at Camp Nou when the renovation of the stadium is finished.

Regardless of where he ends up next, Messi’s decision to retire at Newell’s Old Boys would be a landmark moment for Argentine football.
