Written by Benjamin Adewumi

Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, has made headlines with a sensational acrobatic goal during Trabzonspor’s 2-1 victory over Konyaspor in the Super Lig. The goal, which has been widely acclaimed, is being tipped to win the prestigious Puskas award.

Onuachu, who joined Trabzonspor in September after a stint with Southampton, has been thriving in the Turkish league, scoring six goals in eight games. His latest performance included a brace in Trabzonspor’s win over Konyaspor, with his second goal stealing the show.

The Nigerian striker opened the scoring for Trabzonspor in the 59th minute, but it was his second goal that caught everyone’s attention. After Konyaspor equalized in the 77th minute, Onuachu pulled off an astonishing backheel volley past goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni off a cross from Enis Destan. The goal was so spectacular that it drew comparisons to the famous backheel volley goals scored by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Oliver Giroud.

Sky Sports Italy likened Onuachu’s goal to the spectacular backheel volley Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Oliver Giroud scored in the past. Giroud’s scorpion-kick goal against Crystal Palace in 2016 won the FIFA Puskas Award for goal of the year, while Ibrahimovic also replicated such feat against Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon while playing for his country at Euro 2004.

Trabzonspor coach, Abdullah Avci, described Onuachu’s acrobatic goal as ‘Goal of the Year’, while his club believes his strike will win the Puskas Goal of the Year Award presented by FIFA. “Oh my world, Paul Onuachu really scored a goal worthy of the Puskas award, this is the best goal in Europe so far this season,” Avci said.

This spectacular goal marks the first time Onuachu scored twice in a league match since January 2023 in the colours of Genk. His wonder goal was big news in the European newspapers and has set the football world abuzz, with many believing it to be a strong contender for the 2023 Puskas Award.
