There are some Nigerian foods that we love eating without knowing that they harmful to our health.

A typical example of this type of food is Suya and Kilishi which are made from red meat and research has it that red meat is not essential to the body!  Surprised? Oh, no, come off that coz it’s really harmful to your health.

So, here today, I’ll bring to your knowledge the list of some popular foods we eat in Nigeria that are quite detrimental to our health.

1. Suya & Kilishi

As I said earlier before, Suya meat is not good for your body, likewise kilishi.

We are not saying that you should not eat suya. But, what we are trying to say here is that you should have a limit to how you take in these foods.

Recall I said that they are made from red meat? Yes, they are and red meat does contain certain types of cancer.

Additionally, they are smoke meat, and the said kilishi of a meat contains a lot of salt which is not healthy for you. On the other hand, suya is always covered in oil.

2. Palm Oil

In Nigerian cuisine, palm oil is one of the most used ingredients.

Palm oil is quite healthy for the body, alongside its antioxidant effect. But it contains excessive saturated fat which may lead to fast weight gain and heart conditions.

However, it’s advisable that you consider using vegetable oil to cook or better still, reduce the rate of using palm oil in your meals.

3. Pounded Yam

We all love pounded yams due to their nutritional and health benefit.

Do you know that this same pounded yam contains a lot of calories and starch? Yes, it does and it’s not good for your body especially if you are a diabetic patient, better avoid anything Pounded yam.

However, people that are diabetic-free should eat it moderately and not excessive.

FACT: Pounded yam is high in dietary fiber which is required by the body.

4. Fried Plantain

Just like other delicate Nigerian food, fried plantain is being consumed by some families as breakfast every morning.

Plantain is quite good for the human body because it contains some of the essential nutrients that are needed by the body. For example, it contains carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamin B6/C.

Also, research has it that Plantain act as a natural way of preventing peptic ulcer.

However, despite all the good characteristics and nutritional functions of plantain in a man’s body, it’s advisable that you refrain from or limit the rate of taking Fried Plantain.

The core reason why you should limit this is that;- When the plantain is being fried in oil, it produces more calories which is not all that required in the body. So, it is better that you use other ways of cooking plantain.

Generally, fried food is not good for your body.

5. Eba (Garri)

Hope you know that garri is produced from Cassava which is the major source of protein!

As I have said in others, it’s not that it’s really a bad thing to eat eba, but you have to limit it.

Eating too much eba will cause you to gain more weight as a result of the excessive calories contain in the Garri.

6. Fufu

Despite the fact that Fufu is rich in protein, fat, carbohydrates, potassium, and low in cholesterol, the presence of cyanide in it doesn’t allow it to be a perfect meal for you.

Also,  from our research, we’ve come to understand that every part of the cassava plant has a toxic chemical called Linamarin. So, these are the main reasons why you should lower your rate of eating fufu.

6. White Rice

Continuous eating of white rice means that you are harming yourself.

I know that you’ll ask yourself “Why is white rice harmful to my health?” The answer is simple:

The reason why you were boiling the rice was to refine the rice right? But unknowingly to you that you are refining the carbohydrate nutrient present in rice and Refine carbohydrates adds no value to your health instead it cause you to gain more weight which may lead to obesity.

7. White Bread

White bread is not nutritional to your body at all. So, it’s advisable that you eat more healthy loaves of bread if you are a lover of it.

Now that you’ve seen that the above listed foods are not good for your health. Please try reducing your rate of consuming them.
