Nigeria Ranks Among Top Ten Countries with Highest Number of Students in the US

Nigeria has emerged as the only African country among the top ten nations with the highest number of students in the United States, according to the latest Open Doors Report published by the Washington-based Institute of International Education (IIE).

The report reveals that despite the foreign exchange crisis, the number of Nigerian students studying in the United States rose by 22.2 percent within a year. Specifically, enrollment from Nigeria increased to 17,640 in the 2022/23 academic year, up from 14,438 in the previous year.

Overall, the US hosted 1.06 million international students during the academic year, marking a 12 percent increase compared to the previous academic year.

  1. China: 27 percent (289,526 students)
  2. India: 25 percent (268,928 students)
  3. South Korea: 4 percent (43,847 students)
  4. Canada: 3 percent (27,876 students)
  5. Nigeria: 2 percent (17,640 students)
  6. Brazil
  7. Saudi Arabia
  8. Taiwan
  9. Japan
  10. Vietnam: 2 percent

This data underscores the growing presence of Nigerian students in the US and highlights the country’s commitment to international education.
