A violent clash erupted between the supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday.

The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m., involved a gun battle between the rival groups, resulting in the destruction of vehicles and injuries to several persons, including a police officer.

According to eyewitnesses, the clash was triggered by a disagreement over the use of a public space for campaign activities by the two parties.

The situation was said to have degenerated into a free-for-all fight, as the supporters of both parties exchanged gunshots and hurled stones at each other.

The police intervened to restore calm and disperse the warring factions, but not before some casualties were recorded.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the police officer was said to be in a critical condition.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya.

He said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Bethrand Onuoha, has ordered an investigation into the incident and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He also condemned the incident and warned troublemakers to desist from acts capable of disrupting the peace and security of the state ahead of the November 11 governorship election.

He assured that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would provide a level playing field for all political parties and ensure a secure environment for electoral process.
