In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, confirmed Edison Ehie as the authentic Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly.

Ehie, one of the four lawmakers backing the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in the ongoing face-off between him and his immediate predecessor, Nyesom Wike, was previously suspended and removed as leader of the house by his colleagues loyal to Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja.

Justice M.W. Danagogo, who presided over the case, ordered Martins Amaewhule and Dumle Maol to cease parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, respectively. The court also issued a stern warning against using thugs and police officers to gain access to the Assembly Complex.

The political crisis in the state took a dramatic turn on Monday when approximately 27 lawmakers switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This development is expected to significantly alter the political landscape of the state.

The court’s decision is seen as a significant victory for Governor Fubara and his supporters, and it is expected to have far-reaching implications for the political dynamics in Rivers State.
